Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation Limited (MPSTDC) has commissioned a project to conceptualize, design and supervise the execution of Tourism Development works of Orchha as an Iconic Tourist Centre to DRONAH.
Under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, Ministry of Finance Government of India has awarded a sum of 100 crores for development of Orchha as an Iconic Tourist Centre. The proposed projects under the scheme include conservation of historic buildings and sites in the city, development of better connectivity between various places, state of the art interpretation and tourist activities, promotion of low carbon emitting public transport, support for local crafts and business to connect with visitors, addition of museums including one dedicated to Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad and improved pilgrim facilities in the vicinity of Ram Raja Mandir. The main objective is to create an asset in the city of Orchha which will promote sustainable tourism development and prolong the stay of an average visitor. Besides creation of the facilities at the Citadel and Ram Raja Mandir Complex, the project also includes the conservation of buildings around Orchha, creation of museums in the Citadel complex, an interpretation centre, a museum and park for Chandrashekhar Azad, interpretation of building and paintings at Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal. The other component of the project is landscape development, illumination of monuments and provision of extensive interpretation of the Citadel complex monuments.
